Coast Guard encourages boater safety during holiday weekend

This year to date, 24 boaters and paddlers have perished on the waters of the Northeast.

"Life jackets, for most of the victims, would have been one of two lifesaving factors that could have prevented the loss of life," said Al Johnson, First Coast Guard District's recreational boating specialist.

Situational awareness is the other factor that may have prevented most of this year's fatal incidents. Ten people have died on motorboats, five in canoes, four on personal water craft, two in rowboats, two in rafts and a sailboat and one in a kayak.
